In the Belgian Pro League playoff match on May 10, Genk’s Japan international midfielder Junya Ito delivered an impressive performance with one goal and one assist, helping his side secure a 3-0 home win over Westerlo at the Cegeka Arena.
Ito opened his account in the 64th minute, receiving the ball on the right flank before delivering a precise cross with his right foot that found the head of striker Tolu Arokodare for the opening goal. It was his fifth assist of the league season.
With the score at 2-0 in the 84th minute, Ito cut inside from the right edge of the penalty area and unleashed a left-footed strike into the far corner of the net, marking his fifth goal of the campaign. He was substituted shortly after the 85th minute, having contributed directly to two goals in a dominant display.
The 31-year-old now has five goals and five assists in the league this season, reaching double digits in goal contributions. His form comes at a crucial time for the Japan national team, as attackers like Takumi Minamino (long-term injury) and Kaoru Mitoma and Yuito Suzuki have been sidelined with recent injuries. Ito’s consistency provides a major boost for manager Hajime Moriyasu’s squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
