Paris Saint-Germain secured their spot in the Champions League final after defeating Bayern Munich 5-4 on aggregate (1-1 in the second leg) in the semifinals on May 6.
“To be honest, I watched the game in bits. It was a tough match for both goalkeepers. Safonov and Neuer both showed their class, which is why so few goals were conceded. Matvey made his debut for the national team under my guidance. Making your debut for the senior national team at the right time is always a crucial moment for any player. I’m glad our representative will be playing in the final. God willing, nothing goes wrong,” Cherchesov was quoted as saying by Sport-Express.
Former Lokomotiv head coach Yuri Semin also commented on PSG’s advancement to the Champions League final.
“Safonov played very well. In my opinion, he was extremely confident and made several key saves. Khvicha is a world-class player. I think he was the best player of this match. It’s a pity these two teams didn’t meet in the final. The fact that we’ll see two players who once played in the Russian Premier League in this match is priceless. They once delighted Russian fans, and now they will delight the whole world in the Champions League final,” Semin said, as cited by Sovetsky Sport.
PSG have reached the Champions League final for the second consecutive year, where they will face Arsenal. The match will take place on May 30 in Budapest.
