Ryan Weiss, the former Hanwha Eagles foreign pitcher who was sent down to the minors after a rough start in the majors, made his Triple-A debut on Monday.

Weiss, now pitching for the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Houston Astros Triple-A affiliate), delivered a solid outing against the Albuquerque Isotopes (Colorado Rockies affiliate) at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas. He threw 4⅔ innings, allowing 4 hits (1 home run), 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts while giving up just 1 earned run.

The start didn’t go smoothly at first. Weiss surrendered a solo home run to leadoff hitter Cole Carrigg in the first inning. However, he quickly settled down, retiring the next three batters on two flyouts and a strikeout.

In the second inning, he walked the leadoff batter but got out of the inning with a flyout to center, a caught stealing, and another strikeout. The third inning brought more trouble, with a single and a stolen base putting a runner in scoring position with two outs, but Weiss escaped unscathed.

The fourth inning saw him issue a walk and a single to put two runners on, but he induced two flyouts to end the threat. He recorded two outs in the fifth before being pulled from the game.

It was an encouraging performance for Weiss, who struggled mightily in the big leagues this season. In 9 MLB starts with the Astros, he went 0-3 with a 7.62 ERA, leading to his demotion. His last outing was particularly rough, as he allowed 7 runs in 4⅓ innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Before his MLB stint, Weiss built a stellar career in the KBO League. He joined the Hanwha Eagles in June 2024 as a replacement for Ricardo Sanchez, posting a 5-5 record with a 3.73 ERA in 16 games. The following season, he went 16-5 with a 2.87 ERA in 30 starts, leading the Eagles to the Korean Series.

This strong KBO performance earned him a $2.6 million contract with Houston. But the transition back to MLB has been challenging. Now back in Triple-A, Weiss is looking to rebuild his confidence and earn another call-up.

Whether his solid debut in the minors will be the turning point remains to be seen, but it’s a positive first step toward a comeback.
