Sotiris Silaidopoulos, head coach of Rio Ave, discussed the presence of club owner Evangelos Marinakis in the stands and praised his team’s performance against Sporting, despite a 4-1 defeat in the 33rd round of the Liga Portugal.
Speaking in a press conference at the Estádio dos Arcos, the Greek coach expressed disappointment but refused to criticize refereeing decisions. “I am disappointed, but I won’t comment on the calls. It was a great game to watch, and when that happens, we need to maintain this level to improve the league. The Liga Portugal is spectacular—competitive matches, great players, and excellent coaches,” he said.
On Rio Ave’s build-up play and attacking dynamics: “We wanted to make their center-backs uncomfortable, and we succeeded. With Blesa and Tamble forming a box, we attacked spaces with our wingers. We managed that very well. If you look at our recent games, it all comes down to the final decision. We had good chances in the first half. We were competitive. This is how I want my team to play. Looking at our progress over the last month, I am satisfied.”
Regarding the penalty incident and red cards: “I am very proud of Rio Ave’s display and how our players handled the game. I have to respect the decision—those are the rules of the game.”
On the team’s current form and having Marinakis in the stands: “Let me start with the second point. Marinakis commands everyone’s respect. He knows a lot about football, and we are very happy to have him here. He is a great leader and motivator—it was extra motivation. As for the first question, when we talk about values, we talk about hard work. I have always shown stability in my behavior. I believe in myself, in my players, and in the confidence I receive from them, the board, and the fans. Rio Ave is on the right path, and I am very optimistic.”
