Barcelona manager Hansi Flick expressed gratitude to his players and the fans after leading the team to a 2-0 victory over Real Madrid in Sunday’s El Clasico, securing the La Liga title just hours after learning of his father’s death.
A moment of silence was observed before the match, and Barcelona’s players wore black armbands in tribute to Flick’s loss.
“This morning, my mother called me and told me my father had passed away. I debated whether to keep it to myself or share it with the team,” Flick said. “For me, this group is like a family, so I decided to let the players know. What they did on the pitch was incredible. I will never forget this moment.”
Marcus Rashford, who scored Barcelona’s opening goal, praised Flick’s strength in difficult circumstances. “He showed immense character by staying with the team during such a tough time,” the England forward told BBC Sport. “It was crucial that we gave 100% on the pitch because he makes tough decisions like this every day. My thoughts are with him and his family.”
Since replacing Xavi in May 2024, Flick has now won five trophies with Barcelona, including this La Liga title. Speaking emotionally after the match, he said, “It was a tough game, and I’ll remember this day forever. I want to thank the squad and everyone who supported us. Above all, I’m proud to have such a great team. Thank you for everything. Now, I think it’s time to celebrate.”
Barcelona confirmed the passing of Flick’s father shortly before the match, releasing a statement: “We share in your sorrow, and our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.” Real Madrid also offered condolences, saying, “Real Madrid, its president, and its directors deeply regret the death of Hansi Flick’s father. We express our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace.”
