The “Can Do” Kids Eat Out

Friday, September 1st, 2017

picture of Miss Pat, Kids teacherMiss Pat couldn’t help but notice that some of the “Can Do” Kids were not using good table manners in the cafeteria.

She had money left from a class trip in May, so, she decided to take the “Can Do” Kids out to the local diner in the hopes that eating in a restaurant might help them to remember their manners, at least she hoped they would.

Before they walked to the “Can Do” Diner. Miss Pat reviewed the rules:

  • When ordering, speak clearly and politely and say please and thank you.
  • Order what you know you will eat.
  • Use your napkin to wipe your face and hands, don’t wipe your hands on your clothes.
  • No pushing or seat grabbing.
  • No throwing food, touching other kids food or using straws to blow milk at each other.

The “Can Do” Kids all agreed to mind their manners and behave. Grandma Hattie and Grandpa Dooley agreed to come along and help Miss Pat.

The walk to the restaurant went well. The “Can Do” Kids were fine sitting down. Things didn’t get tough until the menus came out and each “Can Do”had to decide what to order. Naturally most of the “Can Do” Kids wanted French fries and a soda with their meal, but Miss Pat wanted them to take a veggie and low fat milk.

Grandpa Dooley suggested a compromise. Every “Can Do” who chose a veggie over French fries and milk over soda got to have a dish of ice cream for dessert. All but one “Can Do” chose veggie’s and milk. The one who held out for French fries, was, you guessed it…Hector. So, his dessert was a small fruit salad. Miss Pat wouldn’t give in on the soda; Hector had to drink milk!

The “Can Do” Kids made Miss Pat proud;they were well behaved. Miss Pat proved to herself that the “Can Do” Kids did have table manners.

Do I Have to Go to the Dentist?

Friday, May 26th, 2017

seeing the dentistGrandma shook her head listening to Willie say,”Grandma, do I have to go to the dentist”?

Willie called back from the other room,” Why do I have to go to the dentist, today”?

Here we go, thought Grandma Hattie, then she said. “Please come in here, Willie. I am tired of shouting back and forth.”  Willie answered as he walked towards his grandma. “yes mam.”

Grandma Hattie sat Willie down and said, Willie to answer your question, do I have to go to the dentist, yes, you do”!

Willie whined as he said, “But why do I have to go to the dentist when I just went six months ago”?

Grandma really didn’t like it when Willie whined and she said, ” Willie, stop whining, nobody likes a whiner”!

Then Grandma Hattie took him through all the reasons he had to go to the dentist:

  • The dentist needs to keep a close check on your teeth and gums to make sure they are healthy
  • The dentist needs to find cavities while they are small and easy to take care of
  • The dentist wants to make sure you know how to brush your teeth properly
  • To have the cleanest and healthiest teeth, you need to have them cleaned twice a year by the dentist.

“Okay, I guess I do have to go to the dentist,” said Willie.

With his grandma’s help, Willie takes good care of his teeth just as th dentist tells him to; do you?

Let’s see how you do answering these questions:

  • How many times should you brush your teeth every day?
  • When should you brush your teeth each day?
  • Do you have to brush all of your teeth, or just the front ones?
  • How many minutes do you need spend brushing your teeth?
  • How often should you get a new tooth brush?
  • Why do you need to floss your teeth?
  • How many times a day do you need to floss to get stuff from between your teeth that the tooth brush can’t get?
  • How many times a year do you need to see the dentist?

How did you do? If you got stuck, ask a parent or big brother or sister to go over your answers with you.

Chores

Thursday, April 13th, 2017

choresThe boys were snacking with Grandma Hattie but she was wondering if Willie did his chores.

Then Willie asked, “Grandma, may I go to Orrie’s when we finish our snack? He has new computer games and he invited me to come see them.”

Grandma asked,”Did you finish your chores?”

Willie said,”No mam, but I will later, when I get back from Orrie’s.” Grandma Hattie answered, saying,”Willie that’s what you told me yesterday when I asked you to put your toys away, empty the waste paper basket in your room and hang your clothes up. You still haven’t done it  and your cousin is coming for a sleep over in your room tomorrow night.”

Willie got all red in the face and said, “I hate chores. Why do I have to do chores anyway? I bet Orrie doesn’t have to do chores!”

Then it was Orrie’s turn to get red in the face. Orrie sputtered and said, “Hey Willie, don’t think that just because I use a wheelchair I don’t do my fair share of chores at home because I do! I fold my laundry when it comes out of the wash and put it away. I dust my room with a big dusting wand. I empty my waste basket in the main trash can in the kitchen.”

Then Hector chimed in, saying, “I have to do chores every day. I have to keep my room neat. I even clean off the table after dinner at night.”

These were not the answers Willie wanted to hear.

Grandma used the time to talk about chores. “Hector, Orrie, do you think it is fair to have to do chores?”

Orrie answered, “My mom says that we are a family and everyone in the family needs to take responsibility for helping around the house.” Hector added, “My mom works outside of the house all day and then comes home and cooks for us. She needs some help.”

Grandma had another question,”What about your taking care of your rooms?”

“Oh, that’s an easy one,” said Hector, “It’s my room, I messed it, I should clean it up.” Orrie nodded yes. He feels the same way.

Willie was still fighting the idea of chores. He said,”I bet you both get an allowance for doing chores.”

Hector and Orrie shook their heads and Orrie answered,”Nope, I do chores because their my responsibility, because I live in the house, because doing my fair share is expected of me.”

Hector nodded and said, “I get an allowance for spending money. It has nothing to do with chores. I get it if I behave properly, do my homework as I am supposed to and get good grades. I can earn more money if I do extra chores.”

Willie asked to be excused. Grandma wanted to know where he was going. Willie answered, “To clean my room. Orrie, thanks for the invite, but my room is a mess. Can I see the game some other time?”

Grandma smiled. Hector turned to Orrie and said, “Can I see the game? I don’t have any chores until after dinner.” Orrie spun his chair around. He and Hector helped grandma clear the table. Then they each gave her a big hug and a thank you and off they went.

Do you do your chores when you are asked to do them?
