Snitching

Monday, September 27th, 2010

As Jay walked home from school  he saw a man run by a lady and grab her purse. Should he:

  • mind his own business and not tell anyone what he saw?
  • find policewoman Paula and tell her what happened?

Is he snitching if he tells policewoman Paula?

Bobby sees his sister spill milk on the floor in the kitchen. Should he:

  • help her clean it up?
  • say ” I’m telling mom on you?

Is he snitching if he tells his mom that his little sister spilled milk?

Annie comes back early from lunch and sees a classmate take a pen and candy from Miss Pat’s desk. Should she:

  • take her seat and pretend she didn’t see anything?
  • tell Miss pat what she saw?

Is Annie snitching if she tells Miss Pat what she saw?

Hector Is Not So Good at Doing Chores

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Hector is great at eating, sleeping, skateboarding, computers and math but he is not good at doing his chores.

Hector and his sister Maria have chores. Hector’s mom says,”We all live in this house and we all need to do our fair share of keeping the house nice.”  Hector agrees but when it is time to do his chores he forgets or hopes his mom will forget!

Hector is supposed to empty the garbage every night after dinner. He always puts it off. When his mom reminds him,  he says he will do it in a few minutes. Most of the time he doesn’t do it.

Hector and Maria are supposed to make their beds each morning. Most mornings Hector doesn’t make his bed. He is also supposed to put his dirty clothes in the hamper each night. Most times he throws them in the corner of his room. By Friday he is often out of underwear.

Hector’s mom says if he doesn’t start doing his chores he is not going to be able to watch his favorite TV show and lose time on the family computer.

What does Hector need to do to remember to do his chores?

Wendy’s Grandma Lives Far Away

Friday, September 17th, 2010

One of Wendy’s grandma lives in China and Wendy lives in the USA. It is her Dad’s mom.  She wants to get to know her grandma before she spends a month with her in China. It will be the first time she has met her grandma in person.

Wendy sends her grandma cards now and then. Her grandma doesn’t speak English but that is okay because Wendy speaks Chinese at home and goes to Chinese school on Saturdays. She speaks Chinese well enough to talk to grandma.

What are some things Wendy can do before she visits to feel more comfortable with her grandma? Do you think she should:

  • Ask her dad to tell her more about grandma so she knows what grandma likes and doesn’t like
  • Start e-mailing grandma and get to know her better
  • Send grandma pictures and ask her to send pictures
  • Make grandma a present to take to her in China
  • Ask Dad if you can call grandma once in awhile and talk to her

What else can Wendy do to feel more  at home when she stays with grandma in China? (more…)

Willie Wants a Dog

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Grandma Hattie and Grandpa Dooley know Willie misses his mom whose away in the Army but they are not so sure that getting him a dog is the best thing to do. They are busy taking care of him and Nellie, his sister, and don’t have the time or the energy to be picking up after a dog.

Willie promises to take care of a dog, but he has never had one before and really doesn’t know all he will have to do to take care of a dog. Do you? Can you circle all the things Willie will have to do to take care of a dog?

Take the dog for a walk 2-3 times a day (with a puppy even more times)

Put food out and clean up if the dog makes a mess

Make sure the dog always has water in his/ her bowl

Brush  the dog each week

Clean up after the dog if she/ he has a bathroom accident

Come home from a play date on time to walk the dog

Get up early every day to walk the dog

Can you think of anything else Willie will need to do?

What Can I Do To Take Care of Myself?

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Each year you get bigger and stronger and need less and less help to take care of yourself.  Circle the things you can do now, without help,  to take care of yourself.

Wash myself when taking a bath

wash my hair

brush my teeth

brush and comb my hair

go to the bathroom by myself

get dressed

tie my shoes

make my bed

pack my schoolbag

pour  a glass of milk  or water

make a sandwich

fix a snack

Wow, there’s lots to do…but you are a “Can Do” Kid and pretty soon you will be able to do all of these things to take care of yourself.
